In the West Michigan Is Going Places series, we are talking with local business owners and community leaders about their business successes and challenges and highlighting the resources available in the West Michigan business community.
In this interview, we spoke with Christy Garner of Soak Irrigation, an irrigation service company that installs and maintains sprinkler systems for residential and commercial customers throughout West Michigan.
RM: Tell us a little about what your business does and how it got started.
Christy Garner: Soak Irrigation started in 2019 as a sister company to Procare Landscape Management, Inc. Dirk and Kyle Bakhuyzen recognized a need in the industry. Soak Irrigation made for a good partner with Procare because we were already doing commercial irrigation.
How has your business changed since you first started out?
Christy Garner: Business has not drastically changed over the last 6 years, but there have been some advances in technology as well as a heightened awareness on water conservation and proper usage.
What makes you passionate about what you do?
Christy Garner: Our ownership desires to be the best at what they do in any venture they start. Their desire to serve others and provide honest, efficient service to customers in West Michigan drives what we do.
How has being here in West Michigan helped your business?
Christy Garner: West Michigan is a great place to live and work. We have loyal customers and great relationships built on a foundation of integrity and trust.
What’s your approach to customer service and connecting with the community?
Christy Garner: Our customers come first, period. We would not be a company without the clients we serve, so we take their satisfaction very seriously. We connect with the community through volunteering with our sister company Procare and through sponsoring programs like Little League.
How do you plan to grow or adapt your business for the future?
Christy Garner: One of the biggest threats to any growing company is the cost of materials, so we do extensive research and network to make sure we are getting the best price for what we need.
Are there any local organizations or networks that have been particularly helpful for you in building your business?
Christy Garner: It’s not really an organization or network, but the Grand Rapids Home Show is always a great way to put our name out there and show people what we can do.
